Concrete Polishing and Polished Concrete Floors

Here at Spec Floors we use Australia's leading brand of polished concrete systems - Husqvarna HiPERFLOOR. Spec Floors are a certified Hiperfloor installer.

What is Polished Concrete?

Husqvarna HiPERFLOOR is a revolutionary flooring concept for the grinding and polishing of old and new concrete floors. Husqvarna has combined advancements in planetary floor grinders, floor treatment products and the latest resin diamond technologies to create a system whereby new and old concrete floors can be transformed into highly abrasion-resistant, incredibly dense, smooth and visually appealing surfaces. Polished concrete floors are suitable for residential, commercial and industrial areas and are flexible enough to be ideal for anything from warehouses and parking garages to hotels, showrooms and shopping malls. Concrete Polishing Finishing Options

Concrete polishing can be finished from a matt to high gloss appearance depending on the customers preference. Materials added to the concrete are uncovered to a low or high exposure depending on the desired outcome. Once ground, polished and sealed the unique underlying concrete is revealed in a hard wearing, practical and beautiful floor. (See our photo gallery to see examples of adding or exposing materials within the concrete).

Materials that can be added to concrete to include:

  • A variety of aggregate can be added to the concrete to give a unique colour and texture
  • 'Seeding' other materials into the top layer of the concrete such as glass, brass, precious stones, marble etc so they can be seen once the concrete is ground down

* Note: Inspection of existing slabs is required to determine the suitability for application of the various finishes. Please see our slab preparation PDF document if you are considering pouring a new slab which will be used for flooring.

Maintenance and Cleaning of Polished Concrete Flooring

A major advantage to polished concrete is the low maintenance required. Every five to ten years the floor may require professional buffing and resealing depending on the amount of traffic and wear it receives.
Cleaning is simple and is as follows:

  • Spills should be cleaned from the surface when they occur
  • Areas where heavy soiling has occurred will require localised cleaning prior to cleaning the entire floor surface.
  • If detergent is desired to clean the floor surface a PH Neutral solution should be used and applied with a mop and bucket of water.

Always rinse the floor with clean water after applying and cleaner.
TIP - A cap full of methylated spirits added to the water will help to prevent streaking.

In commercial situations where the floor is receiving a high level of traffic it is recommended that the floor is burnished daily with a high speed burnisher fitted with red nylon pads.
